Fifty per cent of Muslims are ignorant of their religion —Gov Aliyu
Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State yesterday shocked Muslim faithful when he declared that about fifty per cent of practising Muslims in the country are ignorant of the teachings of Islam.
The governor dropped the bombshell when the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umaru Farouk Bahago, paid him Sallah homage at Government House, Minna.
Governor Aliyu who spoke in Hausa said education has become imperative because it has been discovered that lack of adequate religious knowledge is contributing to some of the misrepresentation of Islam.
“Acquiring education has become a necessity for all especially western and Islamic education because out of the 100 percent Muslims, fifty per cent are ignorant of the true teachings of Islam. You find very few (Muslims) that understand the religion”.
He urged people to encourage girl-child education because it is the safest way of impacting education, adding that, if a girl is educated there is likelihood that her wards will be educated.
“Girl children are the ones who train up children, if a girl is educated both in western and Islamic ways then her children are likely to be educated”.
The chairman of the Northern State Governors’ Forum also urged the people of the state to take advantage of the vast land mass in the state to engage in aggressive agricultural activities that will empower the state especially now that the country is on the verge of a national conference.
“Let me state that Niger state has three times the land mass of the whole south-east states put together and ten times the land mass of Abia State.
“The agricultural products of Niger State and the North in general are what sustain most part of the south, forcing some of them indicating interest to engage in large scale commercial farming in the north,” he said.
